Multiplication Plaids Activity

 Activity 1

1. Open Excel filename:  times_table_form.xls

2. Click on Fill Color icon and choose one color for cell background. 

3. Fill in all multiples of 2

*  Move the mouse pointer to a cell that has a multiple of 2

*  Click on the Fill Color icon

*  Move the mouse pointer to the next cell that has a multiple of 2

*  Click on Fill Color

* Repeat until all cells with multiples of two have been colored

*  Complete the “Times Table Multiples of ____” statement by filling the appropriate number.

4. Move your mouse pointer to the next Times Table.  Use the same Fill Color to fill in all the cells on the table that are multiples 3.

5. Repeat the above steps for multiples of 4 and 5. 

. The completed work maybe submitted to your teacher as requested:

* Print Excel worksheet

* Teacher may look at results on your monitor

* E-Mail: The final draft may be Attached to an e-mail message with the subject: “Factors, Multiples and Patterns”.

Activity 2 - Write about patterns

Choose two Times 12 Tables, which were colored in Activity 1.

1. Write one or two descriptive sentences about the patterns you see. 

2. Write an essay to discuss similarities and differences about these two tables.

Activity 3 - Find the Factors

Pick one of the tables from Activity 1 and list the factors you have identified. 

For example: Times Table Multiples of 3

3x1=3, 3x2=6, 3x4 =12, 3x5=15, …, 3x11=33, 3x12=36,

3, 1, 3, 2, 3, 4, 3, 5, …, 3, 11, 3, 12

List each factor only once and from least to greatest.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …, 11, 12

Activity 4 - Find the Multiples

Use the same table chosen in “Find the Factors” and list the multiples you have identified.  List each multiple only once and from least to greatest.

For Example:  3, 6, 9, 12,15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, …, 120, 132, 144

Activity 5 - Find the Patterns

Look at the plaid Fabric Samples.  Can you find plaids that match the pattern on tables 2, 3, 4 and 5?

Beside the Times Table Multiple number in Excel, record the letter of the fabric that matches best.

Complete tables for the multiples of 6, 8, 9 and 10, See Activity 1.
